13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

    ★★★★

The Good: This is what happens when a Michael Bay movie has SUBSTANCE. This is truly a guys-guy movie with overflowing testosterone and bravado. It's also a touching look at a few guys who just want to get home to their family.

The Bad: It's not short if you're not enjoying it.

The Bottom line: No matter what you believe, these guys were in a bad situation. I'm not sure if it's basic for me to say that this movie makes me feel incredibly patriotic, but it does..

  • Shutter Island

    Shutter Island

    ★★★★½

~I get now why he doesn't like the water...~

The Good: This is an incredible noir-esque thriller without even one dull moment. The acting and stunning island visuals are candy for the eyes and ears. You may guess the ending in advance, but it does not keep you from enjoying the yarn one bit.

The Bad: It doesn't really FEEL like a Scorsese movie. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with it.

The Bottom Line: It's a heartbreakingly epic mystery that will continue to reward viewers even on repeat viewings.

  • Django Unchained

    Django Unchained

    ★★★★★

    ~THE D IS SILENT~

The good: Likely the most entertaining of all Tarantino movies...and that's saying something!

The entire film is Oscar Caliber and very well could have won Best Picture.

The Bad: Not for the easily offended.

The Bottom Line: Come for the bullets...stay for the white-cake!!

  • Snowden

    Snowden

    ★★★½

    ~Oh Brother, Big Brother~

The Good: I was entertained by the performances and writing in this political thriller. The pace and the subject matter never really give you a chance to be bored.

The Bad: While I was never bored...I was never really WOWED either. The main thing that goes wrong with Snowden, is that it never quite reaches a boil.

The Bottom Line: Whether you think Snowden is a Patriot or a traitor, his story makes for an entertaining movie.

  • Igby Goes Down

    Igby Goes Down

    ★★★★½

    ~Igby grows up!~

The Good: This unapologetic coming of age story is immaculately crafted and executed. Igby says and does everything we never had the guts to as a 17 year old.

Great performances by all, however, Kieran and Goldblum shine the brightest. The dialog is first rate, and the story is endlessly entertaining and introspective. Also, the soundtrack kicks major ass.

The Bad: Nothing that I would classify as bad. It may be too heavy for some I suppose.…

  • Texas Chainsaw 3D

    Texas Chainsaw 3D

    ★★½

The Good: While most of the movie is nothing new or amazing, I found the end to be quite entertaining. It definitely does not finish the way you think it will, which is refreshing.

The Bad: It can be quite cheesy, but I expected that.

The Bottom Line: A fun watch for Halloween time, but nothing to write home about.

  • Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

    Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

    ★★½

The Good: Some of the gags retain the Borat charm from the first movie.

The Bad: I wasn't a fan of the daughter. Also, a lot of the magic isn't there because you now expect him to do the outlandish. The surprise of the first movie cannot be duplicated.

The Bottom Line: Good mindless fun.

  • The Lobster

    The Lobster

    ★★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

The Good: While it can be odd at times, it's refreshingly original. It's fun and scary at times learning all the ways they "treat" single people in the future.

The Bad: There is a brutal post dog killing scene that was hard to watch. Also, we don't get to see anything being turned into an animal.

The Bottom Line: A fun off-beat adventure in a cruel new world. Definitely worth a watch.

  • The Void

    The Void

    ★★½

The Good: There are some genuinely creepy moments, and great . practical effects. The end goes full-Hellraiser, which is pretty cool.

The Bad: It can be very...very slow.

The Bottom Line: It makes for a good spook-tober watch, but nothing earth shattering.

  • The Royal Tenenbaums

    The Royal Tenenbaums

    ★★★

The Good: This may legitimately be my favorite Gene Hackman performance. He is delightful throughout!

The Bad: As far as Wes Anderson movies go...it's not the funniest.

Bill Murray and Danny Glover are all but wasted in this one. They are given virtually nothing to work with.

The Bottom Line: Worth the watch for Hackman, but nothing like Rushmore or Bottle Rocket.

  • Revenge

    Revenge

    ★★★

    ~TITLE VERY ON THE NOSE~

The Good: For an "on the nose" revenge flick, this movie is shot waaaay too well. Everything is so beautiful it practically glistens...that is, until the blood starts flowing.

After seeing what these guys do to this poor gal, it's very rewarding seeing her take them down!

The Bad: While I admire her will to survive, I'm not sure how she could become quite so accurate with a rile that fast. I'm also not sure how she could function so long with her injuries and no water etc.

The Bottom Line: Good revenge movie, just don't expect it to be realistic.

  • The Room

    The Room

    ★★½

The Good: The first third has fun moments as we watch the young couple get everything they ever wanted.

The Bad: The last 2/3 was formulaic with very little scares in sight.

The Bottom Line: It's an okay watch if you're bored, but nothing more.
