DC's pivot from dark and dreary messes to colorful messes is certainly a step in the right direction and while I could sense a lot of promise with these characters, the humor, and the camp, I don't think it's great even as mindless entertainment. It's truly sad how superhero fatigue courtesy the corporate machines has rendered even a sillier and more joyful franchise film a slog.

This film is superbly shot and there's nothing that can take away from the technical prowess on display here but I found myself wanting more to chew on. The characters are purely the vehicle for a war story that, while exhilarating, has less of an impact than similar genre films.

Breakneck pacing tells a story that's not only thoroughly uninspired but also a veritable mess of Macguffins and characters that feels like crowd pleasing fluff after The Last Jedi. Not only is this an unenjoyable film with middling action, bored performances, and a very special 'fuck you' to Carrie Fisher's memory, it also ends the Star Wars saga on such a poor note that I'm content with ending rewatches of the Saga with Episode 8.

Uncut Gems might not be grappling with new ideas in the genre but damn if it isn't oozing style and wit, making for a gripping and entertaining couple of hours.
