The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★½

It’s difficult to make you care about such awful people but Lanthimos’s has everything - script, performances, sound design, editing and lots of technique - that help him to show the pitilessness, sourness and emptiness of the court. There are laughs, but it’s the tragedy that will stay with me. That said, will I want to watch it again? Another film about horrible rich people? Perhaps that says more about me at the moment - this nagging feeling that everything must be useful and relevant to the political and environmental crises that are unfolding. Anyway, I loved it. It’s his most accessible film I suspect and I hope it encourages people to see The Lobster and Dogtooth. His characters can hardly ever escape their own subjective experience, caught in their narrow worlds, and maybe that’s one of the most relevant subjects after all.
