Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

Back in 2016, when I wasn't even old enough to see it at the theatre, everyone I knew was obsessed with Suicide Squad. Yikes, even I had a phone case with Leto's Joker on it. The trailer was incredible, mixing action with the brilliant soundtrack perfectly and building an unbelievable amount of hype among people my age. Yet, of course, it wasn't to be. Despite it holding a lot of potential to be something different and exciting in a very familiar superhero genre, the film was so hell-bent on being the next big thing that it's baffling how it struggled with its storyline to such a distressing degree.

While Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Will Smith's Deadshot may be perfect, the film itself, from the first scene to the last, is an absolute mess with a weak villain flimsy stakes and very little character development that ultimately hinders the best efforts of a talented cast. Sadly, it's just another situation of the studio mishandling a director’s 'vision' and taking control away from them and while I can't say it would be any better than this, it surely couldn't be any worse. Let’s just hope James Gunn finally does this mismatched team justice later this year.
