i first watched BICYCLE THIEVES in my high school italian class when i was 14, and i remember feeling super upset and frustrated with it. it’s a painful film to watch! i rewatched it in a film history class when i was 19 and was able to appreciate it a lot more after learning about italian neorealism as a whole, but still didn’t really like the film. now at the age of 24 i find myself enjoying BICYCLE THIEVES in spite of the fact that i experience so much secondhand anxiety watching it that i feel like my skin is shriveling up. oof. anyway. i think enzo staiola gives one of the best child actor performances of all time here. everything about him is completely candid, and the look in his eyes at any given moment is unforgettable.
