Killing Them Softly

Killing Them Softly ★★★½

My review from Cannes (scroll down a bit) predictably bitches about the supersubtext, but I want to stress that until Pitt shows up this is fanfuckingtastic, just a masterful exercise in sustained tension. (Not that Pitt is bad, by any means—his arrival just signals a shift in priorities, and what follows "has moments" rather than simply being one endless agonizing moment.) Scoot McNairy is this year's most prominent Actor I Didn't Know Whose Name I Made A Point Of Looking Up.
