London Road

London Road ★★★★

Second viewing, no change. It actually worked less well for me as a musical this time ("It Could Be Him" and "Cellular Material" are clear standouts; many of the other numbers are kinda blah melodically, relying on lyrical repetition for their impact), but that was counterbalanced by greater appreciation for its thematic ambition (which might have been clearer the first time around were the surviving sex workers employed as a mostly silent Greek chorus earlier on). Not for every taste, but at least it's trying to do something innovative, rather than just clumsily replicating the past like another recent musical I could na na name.
