Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★

Honestly, I have no idea what compelled me to watch this, it being a zombie film (a sub-genre I typically find abhorrent) directed by Zack Snyder (whose films tend to gross me out philosophically.)

But man, it sounded like an interesting premise. An action heist movie by way of Escape From New York? Sign me up, that sounds like a pretty cool spin on a zombie flick! And it starts off pretty strong in that regard. But there’s so much extra bullshit with the Alphas and zombie social hierarchies that really only serves to give the movie an unnecessary “big bad,” and it just drags the story out way longer than it needs to (geezus did I feel that 2.5hr runtime towards the end.) It’s also a good reminder of how much Zack Snyder owes his style to Larry Fong. Snyder’s own cinematography is.... really not good. The overuse of extreme shallow focus is exceptionally obnoxious.

Bautista is great, Tig Notero is great, the ensemble is pretty solid, and there are some interesting action set pieces. But 2.5 hours later I’m only feeling really bummed out, frustrated, and reminded of why I hate these kind of movies... though in all fairness, even Shaun of the Dead really stresses me out, so in hindsight I’m not sure why I thought I’d find this any of this enjoyable.
