Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★

The score stood out to me immediately, one of the most original and stirring soundscapes I’ve seen in a while. Performances are stellar, kaluuya is a fucking god. It does however feel like a typical oscar bait film in its conventional form and the way it attempts to create sympathy for the white fbi officer. The revolutionary message seems to become futile when it’s packaged for a non-revolutionary white audience. I think the fact that they don’t undermine Hampton’s politics, and also Fred Hampton Jr’s contribution, saves the film from falling into the category of ‘futile white guilt’. I don’t know, something about it still doesn’t sit quite right? Overall it’s a very good film, I’m just worried about hollywood’s repackaging of black history in a way that is palatable for white audiences, and about Fred Hampton’s legacy potentially falling into the wrong canon.
