I spent the entirety of this viewing trying to remember if I had seen this before and it turns out I had. The sense of it being a vague memory or déjà-vu really added to the experience, so thanks to my garbage brain for that.
The first time I watched this I downloaded a terrible cam rip that featured on screen graphics and a few mid-roll ads advertising a sketchy online casino and it was still excellent. I’m pleased to tell you that it is even better in high definition.
Watching this film made me realize that Christopher Nolan’s best film is The Prestige because it’s the only film of his that understands what his films actually are: elaborate setups for technical exercises disguised as magic tricks. He has nothing to say except “look what I can do.”
