Please respect how liberal I am with stars. I’m here for a good time, not an overly critical one.

Really surprised by this film, which transcended “good for a Marvel movie” and was, in fact, a good action movie. I would love to live in the world that got the version of this that didn’t use so much CGI, at least during the fight sequences, but in 2021 that qualifies as a “light complaint.”

Completely ice cold of Scorsese to waltz into the children’s movie arena and do everything right on his first try. Packs more ideas into its frame (the people in the station not questioning who keeps the clocks running and theoretically being okay with the arrest of the boy responsible, for example) than most, exploring them in ways that are neither too obvious nor too easy. Catch me outside the nightclub yellin’ “Marty! Hugo … I liked it!”

There’s a lot to like here. From a technical standpoint, I was impressed with the long, static shots employed during moments of tension and silence. I also found myself missing New York, though it’s just a city I visit when I’m doing poetry readings or visiting friends. The film does an extremely good job with atmosphere—the ICE raids and news reports and Trump speeches feel like a hand gripping a throat, to say nothing of how events have progressed since…

And the people asked of her, “Colette, would you give a film five stars just because it has a lot of Pearl snap western wear shirts?” To which the woman replied “I just did.”
