A beautiful, twisted and haunting romantic fantasy from masterful filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Technically it's a marvel, from the direction to the production design, set decoration, makeup, costumes, sound and score, it's all exquisite. The acting across the board is also top notch, with special mention to Sally Hawkins, who manages to capture the attention and heart of the viewer without speaking a word.
I felt the script could have been a bit stronger as well as a few moments throughout the film, yet overall it's a very well made, enjoyable film.
Would comfortably say it's right up there with Del Toro's best.
A witty crime / thriller directed excellently by the Coen brothers. The midwest location is captured brilliantly with the cold / isolated snow setting, topped off with the actors accents. The brilliance here however lies in its two most impressive facets... the astoundingly exquisite screenplay, and the astoundingly exquisite performance from Frances McDormand.
