Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★½

52 Week Film Challenge - Week 4 - A Film With a Place Name in the Title.

Well shit... I seem to have come across yet another well loved film that I didn't like that much at all.

I seem to love Carpenter's horror films but the rest not so much.

💕The Good:
The premise is amazing! I enjoyed the set up and I thought the film started off pretty strongly. My hopes were up.

Kurt Russell is just bloody stunning! Was then and is now. #facts

There were a couple of pretty good jokes at the end.

💩The Bad:
It all started to go downhill for me once Brain (Harry Dean Stanton) and Maggie (Adrienne Barbeau) came into the picture. The whole middle half was just dullsville for me (I even dozed off a bit). Then it got slightly better again at the end.

Kurt just seemed bored to me. He wasn't intimidating. This is probably the worst I've ever seen him act if I'm honest. (Sorry Kurt). He just seemed such a wrong fit for this role. Look, I know I'm in the minority here because he became an icon but that's my opinion. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I really didn't like the characters. I don't think I liked any of them. None made an impression apart from maybe Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) and Barbeau's boobs. I thought Isaac Hayes was a pretty rubbish villain and I felt nothing when anyone met their demise.

I would say I liked the look of the film but it was that damn dark that I just don't know if I did.

And for the first time ever, I wasn't that keen on Carpenter's score. Madness! Never thought I'd ever say that but here we are.

😍Eye Candy: Kurt Russell. 🤤 I wanted to lick his snake (tattoo).

So overall, absolutely gutted to pretty much dislike another well loved Carpenter classic (the other was They Live). I may give it another go one day but in no hurry at all. Might not even bother with the sequel.
