I’m all here for this David Byrne as Internet Boyfriend revival that’s going on right now, it makes sense because there’s something so earnest and unforced about him, no matter what he’s doing. A lot of things in this, and Stop Making Sense, and Talking Heads stuff in general, could feel pretentious to me if they were generated by someone else, but because David Byrne only ever makes you feel like he’s pursuing things that genuinely interest or excite him, they never do. Right now that kind of thing is an antidote to the times so an expression of it weirdly is a symbol of the times. American Utopia is a pretty perfect statement of what the David Byrne factor is and why it’s special.
