Letterboxd — Your life in film

This is the first time I’m rewatching and other than the truly next level uncomfortable sex scene idk if I remembered any of it. Idk if it’s going to move up my Baumbach power rankings but I definitely undervalued it. Lovely little James Murphy score

I remember after this movie came out the published screenplay was like a featured book at the Strand for like 2 years. That’s how you know you’re living in New York, baby

Went with this for a rainy day pick and I think it was the right choice

Loved it in theaters, felt very lukewarm rewatching a few years later, now I’m splitting the difference. 

If you had asked us to guess which of these kids would grow up to be one of our generations best actors, we all would have guessed wrong

In college the big short films that the whole film department worked on at the end of the semester were selected from feature scripts from a screenwriting class, then edited down while trying to basically maintain a 3 act structure, which in retrospect is a totally insane way to guarantee that your film has a weird off vibe. This attitude seemed to trickle down to other student films as well. I remember watching this for the first time around then and being very struck by it in comparison, and wondering why the films couldn’t be scrappy little short stories like this

A couple years ago on the night of a bad breakup, I gave myself permission to rent any movie I wanted that I thought would cheer me up and I picked this and it worked. Today I got a possibly good but very confusing letter from my dental insurance so I’m trying the same thing, fingers crossed.

Got kind of emotional watching this. I’m sure I’ll unpack that later, but for now, time to log it, fold it a million times, wrap it in tinfoil, and bury it in the backyard

Having only seen Todd Haynes stuff from the late 00s-10s I’m going to watch his early stuff today because people say it’s great and also so I’ll stop confusing him with Todd Field who I also like

Weird incomprehensible movie that still has at least one sight gag I’ve never seen before, so... I think I liked it!
