Russell gives a great performance, and the world building is top notch, but, I don't know. Something has always been missing for me with this one. Maybe it's the lack of a really solid set piece. The gladiatorial match, which keeps cutting away when the two are about to fight, is perhaps symbolic of the whole: there is the promise of some great action that never quite arrives.
