Shot in a beautiful noir style with a story that feels unique in either the western or noir traditions. Stanwyck delivers a fantastic, passionate performance. But something left me a bit cold. Perhaps it's that the characters are allowed to cross the line from "complicated" to outright cruel just a bit too easily. This is perhaps a bit reductive, but it is ultimately about a bunch of rich, powerful assholes being abusive towards one another. For all the strengths of the film, and its beauty, that kept me distant.
