BlacKkKlansman

BlacKkKlansman ★★★★

I’m sitting in an Indian joint rn trying to figure out my thoughts on this one. It’s great. It’s easily Spike’s best work since 2006 but that’s pretty damning praise. I’m just trying to understand why I didn’t feel that overwhelming feeling that I get from Spike at his best throughout most of this. The opening, baptism, and closing were all top tier moments in his filmography but the rest of it felt weirdly anonymous. I don’t mean to denigrate this flick because of that, because it’s really good, but it’s disappointing when one of the most bombastic American filmmakers around takes a somewhat restrained approach (aside from a Dutch angle or ten)
