Paddington 2 ★★★★★

Critic brain: Paddington 2 is incredibly thematically complex and mature, especially for a kids movie. It does an excellent job presenting its ideas of bigotry, jingoism, and prison reform in a way that's palatable to all audiences, and the level of artistic commitment behind and in front of the camera is stellar. Dario Marianelli's score is one of the best of his already impressive career, and the beautiful production and costume design is well above and beyond the average live action kids film. The fact that it was dumped in theatres in January and given no awards push despite it's obvious quality is a perfect example of the way film society devalues "kids" movies regardless of merit.
