I didn’t expect too much going into this movie. A heist/zombie movie directed by Zack Snyder with the main lead being Dave Bautista. Those aren’t things I’m going to raise my standards for but maybe next time I should. This movie surpassed every expectation I had.
I’m just going to get this out of the way fast, the zombies in this movie are awesome. They’re not my preferred type of zombies. I’m more of a 60s or 70s zombies type of guy but I really enjoyed the zombies in this movie. I adore the concept of having ranks within zombies. Their is the typical stupid and slow zombies. Then you have the alpha zombies which are smarter, faster, and stronger. The queen and king zombies are also very cool with the King zombie having his protective helmet. The zombies make up and all the affects in the movie are done well.
The acting and plot of the movie were a pleasant surprise. The characters can be basic at points but I think most of the cast does a good job making them interesting. Raúl Castillo, Garret Dillahunt, and Matthias Schweighöfer being stand outs for me. (Having Hiroyuki Sanada in this movie and only using him for 15 minutes is a crime by the way.) The movie also knows when to be funny and when to be serious. My main problem with the acting is having Dave Bautista as a lead. He’s okay, he’s acceptable and that’s the problem. You always want your lead to be a stand out and I just didn’t see that here. He does a fine job with everything he does and he’s definitely not bad. I think he is a good fit for this movie however so I think he barely passes for me. Although I will give him props for showing a wide range of what he could do with his acting. I think after some more work and experience he could be massive name in cinema.
The plot works very well with the cast. The cast kind of has this synergy with the movie that just works perfectly. The plot is also perfect for this kind of movie. It isn’t too crazy or complicated so you can just sit back and escape reality.
I don’t have too much to say about this movie. It’s just dumb fun. I saw it at home on Netflix but if you can watch it in theaters DO IT! This is the most fun I’ve had with a movie in a long time and is very enjoyable!
