The only reason why I watched this movie is that it looks like a fun movie. It should be noted that I never played any of the Monster Hunter games and I know very little of the franchise. I end up renting this movie from my local Red Box and I honestly liked it. Monster Hunter is not a good movie, but it's dumb fun. I knew this movie was going to be stupid and that's what I got. This movie gives me what I wanted which was people fighting monsters. I love the special effects in this movie because the visuals look awesome. I thought the movie would look cheap, but they didn't. For a movie with a budget of 60 million, the movie feels like it has a budget that is way bigger. Rathalos himself was awesome and it was a total treat to see him wreck some shit up.
What ruined the movie for me was the characters. The military characters in this movie feel so pointless. None of them are interesting and have any personality to them at all. Milla Jovovich's character feels like a diet version of Alice from the Resident Evil live-action movies. Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak 1-3) as Hunter should have been the main character because his character was more interesting in my opinion. You also have other cool hunters and they didn't show up until later in the movie. Makes me wonder why did they need these military characters in the first place? You have a cool fantasy world with a group of characters that are already fighting monsters. It feels like wasted potential to me.
Despite the flaws that this movie has, I still enjoy it as a guilty pleasure. I recommend checking it out if you are curious. Rating: 6.5/10
