Already 10 minutes in Nolan explains the 'inversion' to us through Barbara who starts her conversation with Washington with: "Let's skip the small talk". "Skipping small talk" is exactly my problem with this film...hardly a first act, no getting to know one and another and a high speed overdosis of action sequences.
