Though David Robert Mitchell is technically a member of Generation X (Nirvana references abound), he seems to most identify with Millennial malaise. "Under the Silver Lake" is a story about disaffected young men and their need for a meaning behind the meaningless analog detritus they've surrounded themselves with. It's a conspiracy film in search of a conspiracy. No wonder it's so inherently disappointing.
