I'm glad I didn't know about Richard Farnsowrth's suicide in 2000 until after watching The Straight Story, because I was weepy as fuck every time the camera was positioned in front of him, the look in his eyes when he reassures his daughter after a doctor's visit, as he lies and tells her he's going to live until he's 100, the look on his face destroyed me and now I know why, because I wasn't looking at the face of an actor, but of a man in pain, a man who knows he doesn't have much longer and as he portrays Alvin Straight's remarkable journey, we see a glimpse of Farnsworth's too.
