Southland Tales ★★★★

“This is an epic Los Angeles crime saga.”

Honestly this is the kind of ambitious, messy, over the top shit that I love. Richard Kelly’s follow up to Donnie Darko feels like an alternate universe that’s really not too far off from ours. It’s actually kind of scary how relevant it feels right now, depicting a nation in the midst of a crisis of war and fascism with an election year as the backdrop. This movies really got it all; The Rock, Marxist groups fighting against corporate capitalism, Mulholland Drive references, and even a god damn M*by score. I can see why it’s turned off a lot of people, but maybe it was just too ahead of its time. I would love to see Kelly’s extended Cannes cut, I’m looking at your Criterion!
