Emotionally devastating in ways I wasn’t even expecting. Much more subtle and quiet then I anticipated but that’s a really great thing. The sound design in some of the best and most purposeful I’ve ever seen in a film, Ahmed’s performance really is the best of the year and the ending is an easy favourite. For a story with such strong anger and sadness behind it, the film still finds ways to be surprisingly optimistic. You’ll feel every type of emotion in Sound of Metal, it all just sweeps over you to create an extremely cathartic experience. Themes of denial and eventually acceptance are played with beautifully and I was left pretty speechless. In a year filled with disappointments, this comes as a bright example of what the best filmmaking can achieve.
