Punch-Drunk Love

Punch-Drunk Love ★★★

Arguably PTA’s most beautiful looking film. There will Be Blood and The Master are visually more striking, but neither have the amazing colour palate of this movie.

Sandler’s performance can’t be underestimated. In the wrong hands his character would be nothing more than a petulant incel, but Sandler manages to bring a redeeming quality to Barry by conveying his crippling shame so convincingly.

Thematically I think it’s one of the strongest entries in PTA’s early work. It’s more coherent and neater than Magnolia and Boogie Nights.
