When the main actor here is hilarious, he really is hilarious-- so great performance there. And very, very funny lines throughout. If you were grading on a curve for the Coen brothers, since they're capable of such good things and this is decidedly not their best work, it would really be two stars maybe. a really well made film about the emptiness at the heart of intellectual life today. The grad student-esque anarchist-esque annoying ass commune/house was really the cherry. Beautifully realized details on ultimately sort of uninteresting subject matter; not quite expansive enough in vision or thoughtful enough in aesthetics to be wholly a success, but still very much worth a watch.
Astonishing how bad this movie is.
Like so many other bad films, you can see precisely what they were going for at every moment-- e.g., the claustrophobic camera work is clearly shouting its purpose-- "we are suffocating you the audience, as the subject is being suffocated," the film shouts, as it spends ninety percent of its time either centered wholly on the protagonist's face or on whatever she is supposed to be narrowly focused on.
