When the main actor here is hilarious, he really is hilarious-- so great performance there. And very, very funny lines throughout. If you were grading on a curve for the Coen brothers, since they're capable of such good things and this is decidedly not their best work, it would really be two stars maybe. There really isn't a sense, like in their best films, of what this movie is *trying to say* (besides, loosely, be a send-up of the romantic comedy genre, I guess?) and so much less of a fully realized visual sensibility than in most of their other films. Still, if you didn't know who they were, and weren't watching it expecting something along the lines of (any of their other films), it would be a very funny and barbed, though ultimately kind of empty and unfocused, satirical romcom-- not a bad flick.
