Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★½

Categorizing this film beyond anything else than "the new Tarantino" is already really hard. It's funny, it's dramatic, it's intense and ultimately extremely brutal. The cast is outstanding, full of great names, with DiCaprio and Pitt stealing the show, of course. Late 60s L.A. looks amazing, there are plenty of Tarantino's close-ups, details, flashbacks, but I also felt some of the camera work was bigger and more unusual for his oeuvre. Film references, insider gags and shout outs are a given, considering the film's setting.
Could the movie have been 15 minutes shorter? Probably. But the details make for a deeper, more immersive experience. The tension rises by the minute in the second half and the unbelievable showdown should not be spoiled. Tarantino's career remains a near-flawless highlight of modern cinema.
