"My conscience wants vegetarianism to win over the world. And my subconscious is yearning for a piece of juicy meat. But what do I want?"
Talk about pure art...I don't think I've ever seen a film so abstract and otherworldly as Stalker. The use of the earthly elements and water brilliantly creates a mysterious and immensely immersive atmosphere and the pacing (which I had absolutely no problems with) makes you feel as if you are in a trance. The ethereal score elevates this hypnotic feeling. I was an completely hooked on the journey that the Professor, the Writer and the Stalker went on. The philosophical dialogue constantly makes you think and view the characters differently. At times I agreed with the Writer, at times with the Stalker and at times with the Professor. This made the film hugely compelling to watch.
There are so many elements in this film to examine, from the meaning of the dog, to the representation of the zone, to the insane ambiguous ending, you can spend years and years analysing Stalker. What I will say is that it is an incredible exploration of the human psyche and it spoke volumes to me with the way it shows how we our afraid of our very own desires and inner consciousness because we don't even know them.
Oh by the way this was the new restored criterion blu-ray version and the quality is extraordinary :)
