    Pre-code Lee Tracy was a force of nature, his facility with rapid-fire dialogue making Robin Williams seem like he was on Quaaludes. This one is particularly fun: he’s a Winchell-type gossip columnist who makes powerful enemies out of a big gangster and a smarmy Bing Crosby type crooner played to smug perfection by Dick Powell. And if you’re an Allen Jenkins fan, he has some great scenes in this, too.

    I don’t know what to tell you. I really like the dude’s whole vibe: his style, his framing, the unsettling atmosphere and detachedly off-kilter POV he brings to the table in both this and Jackie. No one’s making movies quite like this. And K-Stew gives one of the only American-doing-Brit performances that didn’t make me cringe. She’s the real deal.
