Basically Shawshank Redemption but better in every way and Shawshank is a pretty good film. I don't know how they did it but the balance in tone is phenomenal - how do you tell a story like this in such a visceral yet ultimately in an endearing way. Oh and the performances especially from Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher are filled with subtleties but at the same time are very emotive. I can't say anything more without spoiling things but for sure One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is cinema and has to be seen.

Four Lions 2010
One of my favourite films and possibly the best dark comedy ever put to screen. A film like this feels like a miracle - how does one make a comedy about jihadi terrorists and somehow make it hilarious and put you through a whole range of emotions. The balance between satire, comedy, tender moments, dark scenes and great character development is almost perfect. The way in which you sympathise with the main characters while also being aware of just how wrong and radicalised they are has never been achieved before and still hasn't since. Films like this push the boundaries of cinema and must be watched.

Platoon 1986
Platoon was great, not quite as good as some other classic war films but still great. Something I quite liked about this was how there aren't any overdone large set pieces or battles with there being more focus on character moments and the impact the war was having on the soldiers. The only thing that doesn't make this a masterpiece for me is how there isn't enough of the true horror of everything shown and don't get me wrong it is shown and shown well just not to the same extend as films like Apocalypse Now. Still a great watch though.

It's a Sin 2021
Great and emotional storytelling. My parents who are gay and were around the same age as the characters at the time said it reflected the time and the feeling really well which just shows how authentic this was. I'd highly recommend it - great soundtrack too.

Mank 2020
It was good but doesn't live up to the combined awards hype and connection to Citizen Kane. I liked the writing and I thought that Gary Oldman did a good job as Mank with everyone else serving their purpose. I found it interesting how they sectioned the film in a non-linear way which echoed Citizen Kane but wasn't as well executed as it was in Kane. Apart from that stuff it's a pretty average film which if you like the sound of you should still watch it but if not then you don't have to.
