Rocky ★★★

I love Stallone's performance (there's a vulnerability, a stunted childish quality in his '70s tough guys that has surfaced far too rarely in his subsequent work), but I still don't fully buy the film's tenuous balance between New Hollywood grime and the uplift that is meant as a tonic to the relentless cynicism. Still, damned if it doesn't hit its mark at times, and it's impressive that a sense of victory is gained from a defeat, even if its simple moral terms cannot possibly support the weight of the Vietnam metaphor laid on them.
