love to see hitmen doing shit and killing each other. rich action sequences with some garish camerawork. the meta movie stuff wasn't necessary.
perfect. a cruel autopsy of the american dream. dissecting how chasing desires, no matter the cost, keeps people afloat. wallowing in their unhappiness. but when you reach the "end" (you've got a new identity, joined the bourgeoisie, have freedom from responsibility), you're still empty. and it happens to all. since you go back for seconds, the only constant is that the profit train keeps rolling.
DEATH RACE 022521:
after rewatching, still think it's his worst. there's the veneer of an interesting theme around capitalism & the economic crisis but it doesn't read clearly. still has the chaotic car deathmatches and frenetic editing to latch onto, but it feels best left in the late 2000s.
