Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★★★

'Escape from NY' belongs to that strange set of films that I had not seen start-to-finish in one sitting ever in my life. I explicitly remember the opening scenes, the weird-looking punk with the President's finger (no spoiler here - it's really ten minutes in!), and of course Snake Plissken. But only today I really know how this film ends...

And it is a hoot and a half, I tell ya... Even though any attempt at placing the story at a set point in the future instantly dates the film, 'Escape from NY' holds really well as a product of its time. Set in the 1997 dystopian future (or shall I say an alternative universe), this film took me on a phenomenally entertaining ride through the noir quasi-Sci-Fi B-movie world with the one and only Kurt Russell at the helm. Not too serious, not too tongue-in-cheek, 'Escape from NY' is now in my books one of the best John Carpenter's films.

And that score... just melts in your mouth... Ears? Both...
