When I first watched this movie, I didn't like the Spanish Civil War part as much as the fantasy part. But with subsequent viewings, I appreciate how it ties into the central theme.
Blind obedience is wrong. Question all authority. Only fanatics obey without a second thought.
I was also thinking whether or not is the fantasy stuff real, or just inside Ophelia's head. And it is true, that other humans never interact with anything that comes from the "fairy-tale world".
Except the mandragora, which is given to Ophelia by the Faun. And the door Ophelia draws on the wall indicates that is the way she escaped her room.
So, the ambiguity is there, but my interpretation leans towards the fantasy narrative being real.
Anyway, it's a fantastic movie, I'd call it one of the best of the 21st century.
