Breathtakingly beautiful without excessive flair or style that calls attention to itself: just scenes of quiet, graceful humanity unfolding in front of the camera. A tender, lovely lil movie that also aches with a sense of withdrawn loneliness, so cozy but also ooof. My first Denis very much lived up to the hype, especially the way music is utilized so perfectly throughout.

Someone should make a mega cut of all the train POV shots in this movie so I can watch it before I go to bed every night, it’s so relaxing

Could not believe the premise of the movie when I was told in advance what happens in this one, and was even more flabbergasted watching it unfold. The very first shot of the whole crew wandering through 80s SF with that music playing was so disorienting and hilarious  especially when compared to the last 3 movies that are so, so different in tone. They go back in time to save the whales! Spock wears a headband to hide his ears!…

First rewatch since we’ve entered the cool zone and in doing so it became even more clear that this is one of the great American movies. So insanely prescient in its depiction of police militarization, capitalism, and the grotesque violence that defines America while also being entertaining as all hell for every second of its perfectly composed 105 mins.

Crime is not something that policing is aimed to “solve” as much as police are meant to wage a violent war…
