Jesse’s review published on Letterboxd:
Escape From New York falls under that catagory of cinema that just doesn’t give a fuck. A punk western you might say. Carpenter does whatever the hell he wants, and he’s having a lot of fun doing it. While watching it’s easy to imagine all these crazy ideas being pitched as a joke, but then somehow being written into the final draft. It’s kind of glorious? Sure there’s lots of flaws, sure it’s dated, sure it doesn’t make sense that a Brit such as Donald Pleasance would be President of the United States, but it’s all part of the charm. Speaking of charm, Kurt Russell. Need I say more? No. But I’ll say a little more. Escape From New York also features another pulsing synth score from Carpenter, and it’s one of his very best. This also has one of my favorite endings to an action movie of all time. Just pure “badass-ary” coming from all fronts.
