Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★

As the title suggests, this film feels almost like a fairytale - a fantastical tale of heroes of a bygone age designed to be told by the warmth of a campfire. Tarantino strings together a naturally unfocused narrative, constantly interrupted by flashbacks and film clips, music and memories, as if echoing the loose structure of something out of a dream. The result is a far more genuine and moving picture than I was expecting, though admittedly one that feels it’s length. Pitt and DiCaprio are golden, with the latter bringing far more emotion than the trailers show you to the role of actor Rick Dalton. The friendship between their two characters is a definite highlight of the film. There’s points where the story lost me, but for the most part I was totally captivated by this tale of friends staring at the sunsets of their careers and finding purpose.
