Such a treat when the movies I want to shrug off as Oscarbait actually deliver
Just so brilliant. Has a good deal of self-knowledge that semi-autobiographical works usually lack. Bob Fosse uses the musical theater devices he pioneered/perfected as a weapon of self-interrogation -- the form matches the content! Woohoo!
I feel like "smiling while I'm having a panic attack" musical theater numbers have kinda become a trope now, but the entire hospital hallucination is so inspired. He has such a command of both dance and film and I'm jealous bc his coverage is so precise 😩
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
This may be confirmation bias, but last night, I watched TRADING PLACES (1983) and it is the only other movie I can remember that prominently features gorilla rape as a gag. How serendipitous!
John Landis was definitely much more homophobic about it. Here, Eric was proud to take Silverback spunk to the face. For that, I have rated this movie higher by one-half star.
