    Under the Skin

This is an utterly hypnotic, beguiling picture, and I will do my best to pin down my thoughts.

Under the Skin features Scarlett Johansson as a mysterious, woman-shaped... something. Perhaps she's some kind of alien, or some mystical monstrosity. But the key part in that sentence, for me, is really "woman-shaped". She's not quite a woman. She's not quite not a woman.

The bulk of the movie consists of our enigmatic traveler driving around, playing the role of kind, lost…

One of the best movies ever made, and I have spent the past 12-13 years being angry that it did not so much as get nominated for a single Oscar. Not one. Fuckin' Norbitt or whatever got an Oscar nomination, and David Fincher's masterpiece Zodiac got zero.

The 2008 Academy Awards truly paralleled the narrative of Zodiac itself, in showing that sometimes there is no justice in the world and the perpetrators of horrific acts simply get away with it. But just like the McPoyle brother at the end of Zodiac, I name thee, wretch. I name thee, and record your crimes for the world.

    Evil dies tonight!

It takes awhile to really get rolling, and the shift to a more ensemble approach takes some getting used to (Jamie Lee Curtis is literally in bed the whole movie), but it's a solidly gory slasher with some sick kills. It's also got a great, intense climax, although it does leave me curious how they're going to end the trilogy. They've written themselves into a weird corner; we'll see how it pays off.

Mom's thoughts: "The writing was so bad."

    Let the Sunshine In

    Is this my life?

I'm starting to feel like Claire Denis's films are always either incredible, or incredibly middling, with little middle ground. Not the romantic comedy I was led to believe, and equally unengaging as a drama; about a woman who struggles in love, but the whole thing is simply repetitive, lacking in direction or emotional depth (outside of "sad & horny", I guess). Almost feel the reception to this would be stronger if you told people it was an…

My house was broken into last night, and the bastard stole my jokes.

Sparks are one of my all-time favorite bands, and I've been excited for this since they announced it. So it truly hurts to have to say: this is the single biggest disappointment of the year.

In terms of plot, the whole thing is just incredibly unfocused. The first half of the movie, which should've been shortened immensely, has virtually no real plot to speak of. The second…

"Do you know why I did it?"

    "Because you wanted to."

Francois Truffaut famously said that it's impossible to make an anti-war war movie, because the act of depicting it always inadvertently ends up glorifying it; that which is supposed to horrify, instead titillates. One begins to suspect that the same may be true of Ted Bundy films. And if the industry maintains its current trajectory, the latter sub-genre may soon become more numerous than the former.

    This movie doesn't…
