    CW: rape

There was a period in 2014-2015 when it felt like everything I watched used sexual violence as a surprise. It Follows, The Gift, season 5 of Game of Thrones, even extending into 2016 with movies like Don’t Breathe. Those are just a few I remember off the top of my head. What’s the worst thing you can imagine? Here, we’ll show it to you. I can only remember walking out of one movie in my life and it’s…

A perfect movie to me. It contrasts the individual with the universal and values them equally while also asking whether or not we should value them equally. Timeless Americana that reaches for the future and shows us how magic, the supernatural, and science may really all be one and the same. This is a Woody Allen film-free page. I believe Dylan Farrow and you fucking better too.

Very strong TW for incest, sexual assault, pedophilia, and grooming. If you can watch it you should.

I can’t decide if this level of cooperation is how astronauts would have to be or if the characters were unrealistic? It at least avoided some tropes that I was bracing myself for.

    Good Time

I don’t think anyone walks away from this movie better for having seen it. Good Time is a bad time that’s very well-acted and very well-made. The final scene is the only time I felt anything beyond horror or disgust and I wanted that moment to last forever.

    Alita: Battle Angel

“I do not stand by in the presence of evil.”

I loved every moment of Alita herself. Everything about her was so cool and wonderful.

...Unfortunately the rest is not so great. At the end of the day, no one can seem to successfully condense entire series down to a few movies. It’s as though all the character- and world-building gets lost in the rush to cram as much as possible into 120 minutes. The emotional moments don’t feel earned.…
