    A gorgeously filmed meditation on the legacy of French colonialism in Africa. It’s not always focused the way it needs to be and doesn’t sustain the momentum it should between scenes. Isabelle Huppert is great, as always, and often her presence is enough to sustain the picture.

    The first half felt so tedious but the second half is pretty wonderful. The plot itself doesn’t amount to much “happening”, but I stuck with the film and liked largely how it ended up. Absolutely hated the dialogue though and the characters are fairly thin. As a film where it really feels like Eastwood is looking back on his career (similarly to Scorsese’s Irishman), there’s some special stuff here. The music and beautiful cinematography really highlight the scenery of Mexico…

    Incredible production values here: the skate choreography in particular is an outstanding highlight. Gorgeous costumes, makeup/hair, production design, score (!!!), cinematography, sound. The two lead performances from Fedor Fedotov and Sofya Priss are outstanding. The story isn’t particularly original but stands well enough on its own despite predictability. Sometimes over-editing gets in the way of the film. Wonderfully directed though. Very fun and enjoyable.
