Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads

Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads ★★★★

One of the more assured feature-length student films I've seen, the only other example that comes to mind as a filmmaker's masterful culmination his eventual style on display in their thesis film is Von Trier's Images of a Relief. Whereas Von Trier's work exhibited Tarkovskian beauty in it's images and camerawork which trumped the narrative elements, Lee's work exhibits a certain deftness in character relationships and a sense of genuine world they exist in - something almost always fumbled in student films at the expense of technical agendas they focus on in order to court the future funders of their work. Most thesis films seems to function like a cinematic business card that simply exists to get their foot in the door.
