truly don't know how to rate this. can i call it brechtian? expressionist? operatic? this alienating melodrama is so bizarre and often ugly but also struck me as kind of brilliant, very much so unique, surprisingly emotionally salient, and all of this with two movie stars (they love each other.... so much....) and a child puppet with white hot star quality leading the ensemble. seriously, baby annette headlining the hyper bowl halftime show is the cinema, is the culture.
i can't rate it, but i can tell you i liked it, it was so different, i many times actively thought “i don’t like this” and i couldn't look away.
