Joe Bandy’s review published on Letterboxd:
SO funny but also so scary! An instant camp classic to me. The script feels written by 15 year olds who do nothing but watch horror movies, with soapy, cliche dialogue and some amazing plot twists that could only come from writers who are too confident to worry about being too much. Wan also seems to be intentionally under directing the dramatic scenes to seem cheap just to then crank the style dial all the way up during the actual horror set pieces and it makes the whole movie so unsettling. It’s the most basic camera set ups for emotional conversations and then it’ll get to a scary bit and have some of the best camera moves and compositions I’ve seen in any 2021 release. Had so much fun with it and can’t wait to share it with some naive audience, as a group of people seems like the ideal way to watch this.
