john semley’s review published on Letterboxd:
I think it was a little ambitious to try and graft the story of Pepe onto some master narrative of the internet, and the very idea of memes (including an insanely boring detour to some English professor quoting Dawkins). And not because it’s not interesting, but because Furie—who had previously struck me in interviews as a bit comatose—is an extremely charming and compelling guy. I guess it’s the nature of his story that he never comes into direct conflict with the other characters, but it still makes this feel sort of inert. The animations save it, which is rarely the case these days. And ditto the third act about him taking Alex Jones to the cleaners to the tune of $2M. Felt good man.
