During a year in which seemingly every artist I've ever admired has spoiled their persona for me with their detachment from the world, it was quite moving to encounter an older, wiser David Byrne praising perspective and a willingness to change and be directed. He is so much more gentle and exacting in American Utopia- the choreography of the show is really quite contained when compared to Stop Making Sense. But the way he moves through the world he creates is so careful and intentional. Spike Lee and David Byrne (and Janelle Monae!) create a few truly resonant moments together. At the very least, it will make you smile!
Also, we were standing literally 20 feet from him for a good couple of minutes before the movie but didn't realize because he was wearing hoodie. Master of disguise.
