Before Midnight ★★

Up until the last 5 minutes I was willing to say this was my favorite of the trilogy. I thought the other shoe was finally going to drop and it was going to become clear that Jesse was a toxic manipulator and they absolutely do not belong together.
But then the moral of the story is...that’s what true love looks like? Someone who talks down to you, guilt trips you, and manipulates you is worth putting up with because they say they love you and that no one else would put up with you like they do?
It feels like it confirmed what I was initially worried about in Before Sunset. Linklater absolutely intended these characters to be idealized and romanticized. This is his idea of love, and I worry that he’s successfully convinced others of it too. All around a horrible and dangerous message to spend three movies hammering home.
